Top Pro Beach Volleyball Athletes Head to San Diego Aug. 1-3 for the 13th event of the 2008 AVP Crocs™ Tour season and last event before Beijing Games
WHAT: The 2008 AVP season is underway and the excitement is heating up as the AVP Crocs Tour stops in San Diego for the fourth and final AVP Crocs Slam event. American Olympic representatives and AVP Crocs Tour top men’s team Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers are scheduled to play.
Dalhausser/Rogers have won eight of the nine events they’ve played this year on the AVP Crocs Tour and three straight international events. They’re a favorite to win gold in Beijing.
As a Southern California beach volleyball destination, San Diego sort of gets lost in the fray of Manhattan, Huntington, Hermosa, etc. However, despite the fact that the AVP hasn’t been back there since 2005, it has a rich history. Since 1949, San Diego has been the host of 51 men's tournaments and 16 women's tournaments. Karch Kiraly has won 10 times there to lead the pack, while Karolyn Kirby tallied five wins in her career, one ahead of Holly McPeak. In 2005, the win by Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh moved them into first place on the career domestic earnings list for a team. Misty has since become the best player in the world, with 101 career victories – the most all-time. She and Kerri Walsh are also in the midst of 96-match and 17-tournament winning streaks.

As the baby boomer generation ages, seniors are quickly becoming the fastest-growing population of new epilepsy (recurring seizures) diagnoses. While the modern medical community has made great strides in properly identifying myriad behaviors in the elder population as epilepsy, many seniors continue to be mislabeled as suffering from dementia and/or other health issues. The diagnosis of a treatable seizure disorder is often overlooked, a mistake that could lead to fatal implications. On August 2, 2008 the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County will present Seniors & Seizures: An Epilepsy Education Conference, for seniors and their caregivers, at the Balboa Park Club from 8:30a.m. – 4p.m.
Registration opens at 8:30a.m. This FREE educational conference will include presentations by San Diego’s premier neurologists, covering topics such as: Recognition and Diagnosis of Seizures in Seniors, Cognition and Memory, Driving Issues for Seniors, and Medicare and You. Health care providers will be able to earn 4.5 contact hours by attending the conference.
To register online: www.epilepsysandiego.org To register by phone: 619-296-0161
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County provides free services and programs to the 30,000 San Diegans living with epilepsy. Seizures begin with a burst of electrical activity in the brain and can range from subtle staring spells to convulsions. Since 1954, the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for people affected by seizures. Some of the identifiable causes of epilepsy include head injuries, strokes, tumors, viral infections, and genetics; often, the cause of epilepsy is unknown.
Seniors & Seizures has been developed with grant support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additional support provided by Abbott Neurologics, Cyberonics, UCB Inc., Valeant Pharmaceuticals and DiMille’s Italian Restaurant.

National KidsDay, the American social phenomenon created by the 126-year-old national children’s crisis charity KidsPeace to encourage adults to spend more meaningful time with the nation’s children, is drawing phenomenal support from the American people, government groups, and a rapidly growing group of top child experts and advocates. National KidsDay has been recognized by the U.S. Congress, endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and is now a rapidly growing social phenomenon with millions of participants involved in events at more than 10,000 locations since it was launched by KidsPeace in 1994. This year, National KidsDay will be observed on Sunday, August 3.
Prompted by more than a century of clinical experience with children and national research that links meaningful interaction between adults and children to the overall health and happiness of America’s kids, the day is drawing impressive support from some of the country’s leading children’s experts, child advocates, political names, and top-tier celebrities. Recognized by the U.S. Congress (House Con Res #302), and endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, KidsPeace’s National KidsDay is supported by a growing roster of VIPs, including Brown University child development pioneer Dr. Lewis P. Lipsitt, TV personality and KidsPeace National Spokesperson Leeza Gibbons, and children’s safety and self-esteem icon RETRO BILL, who has taken prevention and safety tips to millions of schoolchildren.
"National KidsDay is an enlightened idea that promises to benefit children today, as well as for years to come," said Dr. Lewis P. Lipsitt, famed Brown University child development pioneer and national director of the KidsPeace Lee Salk Center for Research. "This special day reminds us of the high esteem in which we hold our children. By dedicating a special day for children, National KidsDay promotes ever-increasing attachments between parents and kids."
“ ‘Stuff’ comes and goes, but meaningful time together is forever!,” said Bill Russ, creator of the nationally recognized children’s safety and self-esteem icon RETRO BILL, who has reached some 30 million school-age children with safety and prevention tips. “I encourage parents, adults and children to use National KidsDay as an opportunity to mark the importance of time well spent together."
"We all do our best, and in these busy times it's so important to make sure that the time we do spend with children is as meaningful as possible," said noted TV personality and KidsPeace National Spokesperson Leeza Gibbons, who now heads up the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation and Leeza’s Place support centers for Alzheimer’s Disease. "National KidsDay is an opportunity to remind ourselves to give the gift of heartfelt time every day to the most important people in our lives."
KidsPeace Acting President Dr. Lorrie Henderson summed up the rationale for the day in a few simple words: "National KidsDay gives America another opportunity to let children know they are special and loved, whether they are our own children, our grandchildren or any child," Henderson said. "In an often confusing and ever-more complicated world, this knowledge helps give kids peace."
Anyone can celebrate the day anywhere as long as meaningful time is spent with a child. To learn more about National KidsDay and free ideas how to celebrate, visit www.nationalkidsday.org .
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
National KidsDay® was created by KidsPeace to encourage adults to spend meaningful time with America’s children, and to celebrate their inherent and value. Recognized by the U.S. Congress and endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, National KidsDay is a registered trademark of KidsPeace to ensure the day is always used for the benefit of children.
KidsPeace is a 126-year-old national children’s charity dedicated to helping America’s kids avoid and overcome the kinds of crises that can strike any child – from traumas to neglect, depression, and the stresses of modern life. Founded in 1882 in Bethlehem, Pa., KidsPeace helps thousands of children a day at 50+ centers nationally and millions more through public education and outreach with the support of its National Spokesperson Leeza Gibbons, RETRO BILL, and other notables. KidsPeace was called “the outstanding organization” of its kind by the American Association of Psychiatric Services for Children and “a prototype of what we need for all children everywhere” by family expert Dr. Lee Salk. SAN DIEGO COUNTY BREASTFEEDING COALITION ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL FUNDRAISER:
“LIQUID GOLD”
TO SUPPORT EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR MOTHERS, BUSINESSES AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
SDCBC PROVIDES INVALUABLE RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH AND BUSINESS HEALTHCARE SAVINGS THROUGH SUPPORT OF BREASTFEEDING
San Diego – The San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition (SDCBC) is pleased to announce its inaugural fundraiser, Liquid Gold, on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Southwestern Yacht Club in Pt. Loma. The event begins at 6pm with a silent auction, and is followed by dinner and an awards ceremony at 7:30pm. For information and tickets, please call Christa Asaro 619-838-0780 or go on-line at www.breastfeeding.org.
The SDCBC has been serving the San Diego community for over 14 years, promoting community health and business healthcare savings through breastfeeding education and support in San Diego County . Believing that breastfeeding is an integral part of parenting, the SDCBC’s mission is to encourage breastfeeding through education and outreach to mothers, businesses, health care professionals, and the community. The Coalition serves as a resource for these constituents, providing access to current, scientifically-proven and culturally sensitive information to help build community acceptance and support of breastfeeding success.
This exciting fundraiser will benefit the SDCBC’s numerous outreach programs, including breastfeeding education and training programs for health care professionals; distribution of over 500,000 Breastfeeding Resource Guides in English and Spanish; donations of over 200 breastfeeding books to San Diego County Libraries and over 100 reference publications to County emergency rooms; the development and distribution of resource materials for employers and employees on working and breastfeeding, in conjunction with the March of Dimes and Rady Children’s Hospital; and the Coalition’s annual San Diego County Breastfeeding-Friendly Business Awards. More information is available on the SDCBC website, www.breastfeeding.org.
“The evidence that breastfed babies are healthier, smarter and environmentally-friendly is overwhelming,” said SDCBC President Nancy E. Wight MD, IBCLC and attending Neonatologist at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women. “The Coalition strives to educate the community, health care professionals and businesses on the tremendous benefits of breastfeeding to encourage their support of breastfeeding mothers in the workplace. Human milk is indeed ‘liquid gold!’”
Of the approximately 45,000 infants born each year in San Diego County , 89% have the opportunity to breastfeed in the hospital, but far fewer (less than 20 percent) receive any breastmilk by six months of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Dietetic Association, the U.S. Surgeon General, WHO/UNICEF, and many other organizations recognize, and are actively promoting breastmilk as the optimum food for infants. In 1997 the California Department of Health Services published "Breastfeeding: Investing in California 's Future" to support and guide breastfeeding efforts in the state. A 2007 updated report and recommendations from the State will be available soon. The San Diego community has also made the promotion and support of breastfeeding a priority.
Not only is breastfeeding a major health resource for the community, it is also good business. Research has shown that breastfeeding helps lower the rate of absenteeism. Breastfeeding promotes healthier babies, and when babies are sick less often, parents require few days of sick leave to care for them. One-day absences occur more than twice as often for mothers of formula fed infants (Cohen 1995).
Breastfeeding can also lower health care costs. When babies are healthier, workplaces save on medical claims. One study of employees found that for every 1,000 babies not breastfed, there were 2,033 excess physician visits, 212 excess hospitalization days, and 609 excess prescriptions for ear infections and respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses (Ball 1999). According to an Aetna case study, a lactation support program helped save participants $1,435 each in medical claims per breastfed infant during the first year of life, and Mutual of Omaha reported an annual savings per participant of $2,146 (Mutual of Omaha 2001).
Finally, support of breastfeeding in the workplace promotes retention, higher productivity and loyalty of employees. A study of multiple companies with lactation support programs found an average retention rate of 94.2% (Ortiz 2004). Additionally, companies that provide a supportive environment for breastfeeding employees may find that employees are more productive
