Marine Protected Areas: Coming Soon to a Coast Near You
Russell Moll
The development of marine protected areas is a complex mixture of science and politics that engages numerous stakeholders. While it is easy to recognize the importance and benefit of creating these networks, it is often challenging to agree on where to place them. Join Russell Moll, director of California Sea Grant, as he explains the intricate processes involved at state, national and international levels and the steps taken to see if these networks are achieving desired outcomes. The California Sea Grant funds marine research at public and private universities throughout the state.
Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA)
This fall’s Perspectives lectures are aligned with the MLPA Southern California Aquarium Partnership, a grant-funded collaboration among Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Aquarium of the Pacific, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the Ocean Institute to present programs for southern Californians about the provisions of the Marine Life Protection Act. The MLPA, passed by California legislators in 1999, directs the state to design and manage a network of marine protected areas in order to protect marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems and marine natural heritage, as well as improve recreational, educational and study opportunities provided by marine ecosystems.
Through lectures, activities and family-friendly events, each institution will
engage local audiences in the important process of designating Marine Protected Areas in Southern California.
For more information on the 18-month MPA process for the South Coast Study Region, please visit California Department of Fish and Game’s website at dfg.ca.gov/mlpa
Perspectives lectures are intended for a lay audience. Birch Aquarium admission and parking are included. Light refreshments will be served.

Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability. Her penchant for eclecticism, whether musical, spiritual or otherwise, brought new sounds and styles into this latest effort, her first original studio album in four years. Eastern percussion and strings blend with electronic hues in the opening track, "Citizen of the Planet," a poetic narrative of her life story and transnational perspective. Morissette's yin/yang view of the microcosmic self being evidenced in the macrocosmic world extends to lead single "Underneath," which reflects the quote: "don't try to carpet the world... just wear slippers."

His menus are designed around the seasons and inspired by fresh herbs, fruits and organic vegetables grown in the fertile coastal soils of north county San Diego. His infectious enthusiasm for the finest products inspire even the most casual of home chefs to cook with organic ingredients and learn everything they can about creating optimal organic flavors. As Executive Chef for the award-winning all-organic catering company, ChileCo, Chef Scott Wagner will take you, and your taste-buds, on a true culinary adventure. Noted for a Caribbean flare, and incorporating the passionate attributes of foods from the countries founded upon the tropic of cancer, Chef Scotty's culinary philosophy is centered upon the chile (heat, passion, North African, Orient, Caribbean, Hispanic, Pacific) as the fifth element to the palate – following acidic, sweet, salty, and bitter. Each dish is artistically crafted to meld the heat and passion with the chi – the vital force believed to be inherent in all things. This combination defines a sublime taste adventure – one to be savored and remembered.

Environmentally and socially responsible grape growing and winemaking is nothing new, but what was once labeled a trend seems poised to turn into an industry standard. Often billed as the new buzz-word in the wine business, "sustainability" is defined as a holistic approach to growing and food production that respects
the environment, the ecosystem and even society. "Organic" is a term given to environmentally friendly methods that use no chemicals or pesticides.
In this class you will hear from a panel of winemakers utilizing sustainable practices in the production of their wine, the pro’s and con’s of certifying wine and a vineyard as organic, and taste through samples of each winemaker’s wine.

Fifty San Diego Star chefs show off their culinary artistry, 30 gourmet food companies wow you with their scrumptious fare, and 150 international winemakers and spirit producers pour some of the most exciting wines and spirits on the market today. Ticket price is $100 per person in advance. Also featured at this year's Grand Tasting:
Olive Oil Tasting & Competition Tent: In this exciting tent hosted by the California Olive Oil Commission, attendees take part in a people's choice judging from gourmet olive oil producers and learn the fine art and nuances of tasting olive oil from the experts.
Chef of the Fest: The “Chef of the Fest” competition is an action-packed culinary showdown involving all chefs during the Grand Tasting event on November 15. If you are signed up for the Grand Tasting – you automatically will be judged in “Chef of the Fest”. There is nothing extra required of you, other than to let us know that you want the judges to come by your booth during the Grand Event and judge your cuisine that day. Chefs compete in one of five categories and are judged by a panel of local and national celebrity chefs, authors and members of the food and wine media. Through a tiered judging process, one chef is selected as the best representation of innovative, fresh, flavorful cuisine and crowned “Chef of the Fest” walking away with up to $50,000 in cash & prizes and some serious bragging rights.
Cookbook Author Signing: Celebrity chefs will be on hand in the Border's Bookstore book tent to autograph copies of their best selling cookbooks.
